A Tip to Better Cleanse Your Face

Cleansing is an essential part of your daily skincare routine and keeps your skin radiant by removing old surface skin cells, bacteria, dust, smoke, residue and make-up that clogs the pores and makes skin dry, dull and lifeless. While cleansing the face area, appropriate products and proper technique are essential for healthy skin.

Here are some tips to assist prevent breakouts and clear them as fast as possible:

  • Wash the face twice a day (no more) with warm water along with a mild soap made for people with acne. Gently massage the face with circular motions. Don't scrub. Overwashing and scrubbing may cause skin to become irritated. After cleansing, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends applying an over-the-counter (no prescription needed) lotion containing benzoyl peroxide. This can decrease oil and bacteria.

  • Don't pop pimples. It's tempting, but here's the reason why you shouldn't: Popping pimples can push infected material further in to the skin, leading to more swelling and redness, as well as scarring. If you notice a pimple coming before a large event, like the prom, a dermatologist can frequently treat it for you with less risk of scarring or infection.

  • Feel, as this your face with your fingers or leaning the face on objects that collect sebum and skin residue much like your phone. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that create pores to become inflamed and irritated. To help keep bacteria at bay, wash both hands before applying anything to your face, for example treatment creams or makeup.

  • Should you wear glasses or sunglasses, be sure you clean them frequently to help keep oil from clogging the pores around your vision and nose.

  • If you get acne in your body, try not to wear tight clothes. They do not allow skin to breathe and could cause irritation. Scarves, headbands, and caps can collect oil and dirt, too.

  • Remove your makeup prior to going to sleep. When buying makeup, be sure you choose brands that say "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" around the label. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks not the same as when you first bought it.

  • Keep hair neat and out of your face to prevent additional oil and dirt from clogging your pores.

  • Protect your skin in the sun. It may seem like a tan masks acne, but it is only temporary. A tan may worsen your acne, not improve it. Tanning also causes harm to skin that will eventually lead to wrinkles while increasing your risk of skin cancer.
