Best Camping Safety Tips For Families

Summer is almost here and if you and your family are planning a trip out to the mountains to hike or camp then you should be prepared with some essential camping safety tips.Whether you're a novice or seasoned camper, taking your family on a trip in the great outdoors is a fantastic way to commune with nature and get to know one another better.

Get the tents out of storage, shake out the sleeping bags and head for the campgrounds. Temperatures are on the rise and nature is calling. But before you load up the minivan and head for the great outdoors, Michelle Terry, MD, a pediatrician at Seattle Children’s Hospital, has some tips to keep you and your family safe and well while camping safety tips. When you’re camping with small children, Terry advises parents to follow the three P’s  planning, preparation and precaution.    
                     
Bring Props

Your car is probably packed to the gills with camping tips equipment and food, and the idea of stuffing in more supplies might seem impossible. However, if you're hitting the wilderness with kids, it pays to make room for a few helpful tools.

Food and water safety

Avoid developing illness from the food and water you consume. Take precautions when handling food and water including: Pack foods in tight, waterproof bags or containers. Keep them in an insulated cooler. Wash hands and surfaces often. Use hand sanitizer if water is not available.Cook foods to proper temperatures (for instance, ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees).

Be Prepared

Avoid making a middle of the night trip to the convenience store by packing a few standard items, like a first aid kit, age-appropriate thermometers, medicine (pain and cough relievers, in particular), bug spray and kid-friendly food and snacks. Whatever you do, double-check before leaving your home that all bedtime necessities have been brought along for the ride.

Pet Safety

If you're bringing along your family pet, make sure pets are vaccinated. Always keep a close eye on them. Check for ticks, and remove them promptly. Make sure pets have plenty of safe water and food, and shelter from the elements.
